Tom Melillo
People have said to me when viewing my work, “Why the lack
of detail and shadow.” I try to eliminate unnecessary brushwork and strive for
clarity of line and color juxtaposition. I’m very concerned with keeping the
overall work as clean and uncomplicated as possible. Basically, most of my
thinking process occurs before I begin painting. Once, I get my shapes in place
it’s just a question of filling in the gaps. A classic example of what I am
after is based on Japanese woodblock 18th and 19th century
prints.
I think of one passage that comes to mind when I’m working
and that is “less is more.”
I was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. I
attended, Quinnipiac University. I owned and operated an Antique Shop and Art
Gallery for many years in Hamden, Connecticut. Studied with New York artist John
McCluskey, and Creative Arts Workshop instructor, Jim Golden. Also, I have been
active in many Art Leagues throughout Connecticut. I have been represented by
New York and Greenwich, Connecticut Galleries.
